Listnight I went to look for Christmas presents and decided to have a look into the Waterstones (the book store. After looking through all of the diet/nutrition/sports nutrition section I found not one zone or even paleo book. I wasn't there to buy a book I was merely looking to see what the public are being pushed towards whenever they look to diet. I live in England and maybe its just here but I think that it is probably the same the world over. Common perception is quite strange and the truth is that most tend to follow the masses. Is the zone emphasised in American life as the premier dietary lifestyle if so how do you think you got there.

A friend of my girlfriend is a personal trainer, she is busy doing a nutrition course and believes that the zone DOES NOT AND CAN NOT WORK. She believes this because her course tutor has told her so, now if people are being told this in the classroom what exactly does this say for teaching establishment?

I read an article somewhere on the site or in on of the CFJs that said when a CF athlete who is tier two dials in to the zone, they quickly become tier one athletes. Fact the zone is optimal for performance.

I see the Zone winning many battles already, but can it win the war when the world has so much ignorance??

Let people think what they want. You know it works well for you and that is all that matters. Although it can be frustrating at times don't waste your energy trying to get people to see what you see. Eventually they will change on their own or they won't. All you can do is lead by example.

You could point out to your gf's friend that her course tutor probably won't earn in a lifetime what Barry Sears earned in one month when The Zone was on the bestseller list. It's easy to throw stones when you're in "academia world". Gotta get out into the real world and see how well your "stuff" holds up.

William -- Just because something sells well doesn't mean it works or is the best option. That would mean the big box gyms and Tae Bo are better than CrossFit.

Leon -- I actually know a lot more people doing Atkins type diets, than the Zone.

Becca - I get your point. What I was trying to convey was that a pompous professor sitting in a classroom throwing stones at dietary concepts that have been widely adapted (especially by black box'ers) is foolish. I doubt Barry Sears is worrying about the haters out there.

And oh by the way, I find it stunning how fast CF is growing. When I first logged on in December 04 there were like 3-5 affiliates. Tae Bo is long gone, at least in my neck of the woods.

Everybody is different based on nature and nurture factors, I have personally found that zone/paleo with about 1/2 prescribed zone carbs is my ideal. Find what works best for you and don't worry about what the other people are doing.

Yeah, this is an age old debate. Bottom line is for the individual the "black box" approach is the way to go: Input--->Black Box--->Output--->evaluate and modify. CF is not going to hit you over the head with the scientific studies...if your wife's nutrition instructor is 5% bodyfat and could burn up WODs, we are all willing to listen to his plan, I'm betting he is neither of those. I love getting into nutrition arguments with overweight non-exercising people, HELLO. Bottom line, the Zone is pretty tame on the diet frontier: 40% from carbs, 30% from fat and protein...how do you argue that's extreme? Just let the results speak for themselves.

Everyone's insulin resistance level determines how fast those carbs go to fat...and that varies from person to person....and will even change in one person.

Zone is considered by "professionals" as low carb....I considerate it moderate carb.
