Robert,
Will you look at my thread: 'enough calories?' and comment? Thanks,
Randy

90% compliance is about 2 cheat meals every week. 90% ain't bad and you will see great results. Start dropping into the 80%tile and your not being compliant enough to see optimum results. When you first start out, I would not have any cheat meals for a month. Prior to establishing discipline, we have a tendancy to find times to cheat, so the scene looks like this: Wed night: "I know my cheat meal is on Saturday, but the guys are going out for a few beers, so I'll make tonight my cheat meal!" Sat. night: "My wife was looking forward to this dinner out, I can't deny her because of my nutition program." Sun: "well it's just a few chips, they do taste better with dip and beer". Mon: "Hey, I only lost a half a pound last week, this program sucks!" 10 years later: "Hey guys, I'm stuck in the chair, could you four pull me out?"

Robb, I have been doing the eyeball zone method. I have not had much routine as I have been on winter break from college. I do better when I have some sort of routine. I really think I have been underconsuming carbohydrates. I have added sweet potatoes, oranges, and canned pumpkin for starters to boost my carb cals. I don't know exactly what I have been doing for the past month. I have printed the zone blocks chart and am finding a scale so that I can verify that I am eating exactly what I think I am and plan to record everything for at least a month. I'm at 195 from about 215, although not all of the weight loss is from the Zone and none of that weight loss was exactly on purpose. The weight lost was mostly fat though as I was at about 19% bodyfat and I now have visible abs again. I prefer to error on the side of eating too much as I have wanted for a long time to be over 200lbs. lean. I am honestly not sure that 205 is a great goal for me performance or health wise but I am tired of feeling skinny and I really think 205 lean will make me feel and perform a lot better at 6'3". I have read and heard a lot of great stuff from you. Any insight you can offer would be greatly appreciated. I am also a microbiology and molecular biology major, I think we have that in common.

Nick-

Buy a food scale and an assortment of measuring cups. Your goal is completely attainable but you are going to need some discipline! Whether you follow the Zone or John berardi's stuff you need to weigh and measure all of your food for a while. Eyeball methods only have meaning when you have weighed and measured...you will be able to eyeball with both accuracy AND precision (from one scientist to another).

Once you get the scales and other goodies shoot lets get you set up on 22-24 blocks.
Robb

Randy-checkign that now.

Robb,

Thanks for the advice. Could you clarify a little bit. Do you mean 22-24 strict zone blocks with normal fat?

Nick

Is it possible to lose fat on CrossFit without strict dieting? I've just started and the amount of work/sweat feels like you're burning a lot of calories and also able to build a lot of muscle— both of which have always helped me lose bodyfat.

I also have to admit that the program has made me pretty hungry. Trying to keep my protein intake up— with lots of seeds, beans, veg.— and not too much sugar.

Am I dreaming or can I get some fat loss this way?

Update:

2 weeks of strict(93 1/2%) 21 blk Zoneing. Weight exactly the same. Performance up noticably. I "feel" stronger; more pulled togehter (pretty scientific, huh?). I complettely sucked at the eye/hand estimating. I can see measuring and keeping a food log for a long time. I don't like the idea but I do like the outcome.

I'm right around two weeks in also, Tony. Up to 21 blocks from 18 blocks. I now understand one reason for a recommended 5 block limit on meals... it is nigh impossible to eat a 6 block meal with good carbs (and I fill with a lot of fruit).

Weight is not up a discernable amount. I plan on giving it a couple more weeks before possibly upping it another block.

My performance was actually good (consistently increased lift poundages) at my old prescription of 18 blocks. I just desperately want/need to gain mass (6'4" 170). New PR in push press (180 from 175) and push jerk (205 from 195) today. Had been a month since I'd maxed on those. Think I could have gone higher on the push press, but I wanted to leave something in the tank for the jerks. I think I could go a lot higher on the jerks if I could tighten up my form.

If carb blocks are hard to eat I suggest some things like sweet potatos, tomatos, apples, oranges, blue berries, grilled onions. I can gulp the above down like there is no tomorrow.
