Was wondering if there are any books, websites, etc.. that would contain good info on what foods are available in season. I have some common sense when it comes to this, but when it comes to the distinction of fruits and veggies in the spring as opposed to the summer, I have no clue but I am intrigued. Thanks ahead for any input.

Gregory - where do you live?
Roughly: cool season (spring and fall and some winter varieties in warm locations) lettuce, greens, broccoli, peas. Fruit - citrus (in semi-tropical areas), apples (fall), cherries and apricots (early spring) Warm season: most fruit, tomatoes, beans, zuchinni, cucumber, squash, pumpkins (early fall). "seasonal" takes on different meaning when applied to season extenders like cold frames and greenhouses. Just cause something is available doesn't make it "seasonal". You will have to decide just how far you want to take it for yourself. by the way, meat and eggs and cheese are also seasonal. In the traditional way of providing food, eggs are only available spring through late fall (chickens don't naturally lay eggs when there isn't enough light). Dairy is only available about 8-10 months a year due to the cycle of breeding and lactation. Fresh milk would not be around end of fall to mid spring. That is why aged cheeses were created - to use the extra milk and to have dairy season extend through winter. Meat is seasonal too if you think about the natural times when hunting would be easier and when the meat would be better. I don't know enough about those cycles to be informative though. |
