Question Crossfit and Having a Cold. Sweat it out?

I've had a mild cold for the last couple weeks (thought it was getting better, and then I judged last weekend for 13.1, BOY WAS I WRONG.) It got WAY worse over the last couple days.

I've been trying to take it easy and not work out so much (just a light jog around the block here and there) and then 13.1 and 13.2 of course. My 13.2 score definitely suffered because of it, too. Really irks me.

Finally succumbed and went to the doctor this morning, which is something I never do! I've just never been sick like this before though.

Symptoms:

NO fever
sore throat, so dry that working out makes it really uncomfortable
coughing/clear and yellowy mucus (gross, sorry)
slightly runny nose but can still breathe without taking anything
stuffy ears
No sinus pain, no swollen glands or anything.

My dr advised me to take it easy, and to try and 'sweat' it out. Wrap myself up in socks, sweater, sit in a steam room and be hot. He said it works for some people, so I wanted to see if anyone here had any thoughts on it?

Bleh. Thanks

Rest. Eat well. Hydrate well. Watch a good movie. Read a good book. Medicate as necessary. Maaaaaaybe go for a very light walk in clothing that keeps you comfortable. Chill.

I'm no doctor, but "sweat it out" hasn't ever been prescribed for any of my illnesses in the last 46 years.

Thanks Mark. I'm restless from not working out! He didn't prescribe it... it just said it works for some, and not so much for others. He's our doctor turned family friend.

Never done anything like that. I've had a doc tell me to swim in the ocean and get fresh air though.

I had something similar a few weeks ago. I took a few days off working out. Used a neti pot 2x a day with warm distilled water and the saline solution it came with. Felt much better the second day and was good to go the 3rd. Not sure if you have one or are familiar but it works for me

Hope you get better soon!!.

Understandable.

Just remember though that exercise breaks your body down. It is your body under stress. If your body is already stressed through illness of some sort, stressing it further isn't likely to help.

Sleep, eat good & hydrate. I have never understood the rationale of people punishing themselves at the gym when they are sick. It's probably the worse thing you can do. I equate it to getting kicked while your already down.

Crossfit was there before you got sick, and it will be there waiting on you when your 100% again.

thanks. I feel better today but Im gonna save my energy for 13.3. haha I said I was restless from not working out, but really, my body isn't craving it. Its my mind that feels like its missing something! Ive been mulling around at home, taking it easy, cleaning, resting, etc. Just doing what feels right and willing myself to recover quickly!

Re: Crossfit and Having a Cold. Sweat it out?

My doctor, who specializes in sports medicine, says, 'If it's above your shoulders and you don't have a fever, you're o.k. to exercise. If it's in your chest or you have a fever, you won't do yourself any good by exercising, and you might make it worse.'
