Sushi on a Paleo diet?

I just started eating raw seafood in sushi but because there is rice in sushi is it bad to eat while on a paleo diet with the rice being the only kind of grain i intake ? And it only being once or twice a week

Re: Sushi on a Paleo diet?

Rice is not Paleo.

Should you care? Well, my own opinion is no. There is little or no evidence that eating rice (or any other grain) in moderate quantities is unhealthy. Certainly the traditional Japanese diet is one of the healthiest in the world.

But if you want to stay strictly Paleo for whatever reason, rice is off limits.

You can, however, eat all the raw fish you want. Grok would approve.

Re: Sushi on a Paleo diet?

Yea, it's not paleo, end of discussion. How "bad" it is is up to you, and how your body responds to things. In addition to rice, there is typically sugar in the binding agent used to make the rice stick together, and there is gluten/soy in soy sauce if you dip your sushi.

Personally, I am paleo, but sushi isn't something I've make a big deal out of in terms of cheat meals, but more often than not I actively choose sashimi (just the raw fish) or ask to sub cucumber sticks instead of rice in the roll if I'm at my regular place.

Re: Sushi on a Paleo diet?

To my knowledge there is no "binding agent" used to keep the rice together... But there is usually a mix of sugar and vinegar used as seasoning for the rice.

In my opinion, the benefits of eating high-quality raw fish far outweigh the negatives of white rice. I like to eat some fat with it (mackerel, avocado rolls, w/e) to try to prevent insulin spikes. Rice is one of the more benign carb choices (as carb choices go): it's virtually empty starch, without the antinutrients/lectins present in many other grains.

So no, it's definitely not paleo (sashimi IS, though, and is also delicious), but I love it and believe the benefits make it worthwhile.

There is nothing wrong with eating sushi. The rice will not kill you tomorrow or wreck your fran time. If you feel like eating sushi, eat it.

Re: Sushi on a Paleo diet?

since you're asking, soy sauce contains soy and wheat and is typically included on many sushi preparations.

Re: Sushi on a Paleo diet?

If you eat sushi, make sure to have some fresh or pickled ginger along with it. The ginger kills off potential parasites.

If you ever get a meal that is questionable, have a cup of green chai tea. A wonderful solution for Montezuma's revenge of many types.

White rice is not that problematic, go for it if it doesn't bother you.
