Plyo boxes - build or buy?

Hi guys,

Would you recommend DIY plyometric boxes or buying them? The ones I've seen for sale seem really expensive considering they're just a box, so I was thinking of building something like this. On the other hand, I don't want to jump onto a wooden box one day and have it splinter into pieces below me!

What are people's experiences of this? Are the DIY kind sturdy enough? This is for a home gym that 3-4 people will be using.

Thanks

if you are handy with wood and tools AT ALL, build them yourself.

Just as the above poster stated, if you've got access to the tools then I would absolutely go with building one. I built of couple based on the plans in the link I'll post below and have been very pleased with them.

I built mine, one of the three sided boxes. I went to home depot with the dimensions and cut the wood. I did have to fine tune some of the cuts but the box is sturdy as hell. Build your own and save money!!

Build own. Not only will you save $$$$, you'll have the ability to make it to your specifications. As stated previously, Home Depot is great for the materials and cuts are free. Make sure you check the cuts before you leave. I built mine a week ago and had some minor tweeks. It's solid though.

I went with low grade plywood (OSB) for under $10, Gorilla glue and some deck screws. It ain't purty but functional. Like I said, it's solid!!

Good luck.

one thing to keep in mind with building your own is that very seldom will you find plywood to be 3/4 thick. usually it is 11/16. this won't matter too much if you build slanted boxes, but may cause problems on a 3 sided box. i cut my inside parts 1 7/16 less rather than 1 1/2.

Re: Plyo boxes - build or buy?

My only wood working experience was junior high wood shop, 10 years ago, and I built my own 20x24x30. I don't have great tools or a work bench, so it was a pain to build but it worked. It's not the nicest looking box but it's sturdy.

Home Depot did my cuts and I didn't check before leaving and ended up having to go back because they cut one end 1/2" short. Free replacement though.

I made several of the slanted ones. It wasn't easy getting the template for the 8 degree angle, but once I made one it was pretty easy. I made a couple 20s, an 18, 24, 30, and 36. Need a 42 now.

What were the dimensions on your 36" box?
