What to wear for cold/wet Tough Mudder?

Planning on doing Northern, IN TM on 11/19. Could be fluke nice day...or could be cold, wet, and miserable. Given the date and location, probably the latter.

So, any suggestions on what to wear to stay warm whilst avoiding restrictive movement and over-heating? Was thinking of 1mm neoprene tight (used for ww paddling) for lower and poly/merino wool top (Costco = throw away at end if needed). Am also planning to wear some type of glove w/insulating (wet) capability and grip (light neoprene, etc).

Headwear = ?
Footwear = old pair of Vasque trailrunners (can trash at end if needed). Socks = ?

Any thoughts/feedback are appreciated.

Re: What to wear for cold/wet Tough Mudder?

I wore 2 pairs of socks, duct tape all over my shoes (which fell off eventually anyways) and a pair of shorts. A shirt will just get in the way and gloves are not necessary if you normally work out without them. Don't waste your time trying to be warm...you will never know warmth during the tough mudder.

Did it a couple weeks ago at wintergreen in Va. You will not be cold except for the ice bath. The course will keep you warm. I wore sneakers, shorts, t shirt. You will be beat afterwards, but its fun more than anything else.

I did Wintergreen too. I wore capri length pants and a long sleeve shirt, both of which were fast-drying material. I was definitely never hot during the event and was shivering cold for quite some time after getting wet. I think it's pretty hard to avoid being cold. My biggest advice is to hold onto your hypothermia sheet as long as possible and use that at any point that you feel cold. I just tied mine around my waist when going over obstacles. Everything you have on will be wet so I don't now whether a hat will help too much. Don't worry about wicking socks, just wear what you usually do. They'll get so wet so there really won't be any wicking that can be done. A few people mentioned to me afterwards how happy they were with their Under Armor cold gear. I brought gloves and only used them a few times mostly for the crawling obstacles. I think I'd probably go without the next time. They certainly don't help at all when trying to hold on to the Funky Monkey bars.

Not sure what a "hypothermia sheet" is. Are you talking about a space blanket?

I did the VA mudder and wore shorts and a long sleeve under-armor with old shoes. No need to bundle up you will sweat through it or it will get soaking wet. use minimum layers keep moving and have fun. It was a blast enjoy it.

Did VA with snow still on the ground and water was just above freezing point. I wore shorts and long sleeve under armor. Gloves are pointless. Felt fine throughout.

Re: What to wear for cold/wet Tough Mudder?

I did Vermont (50 air temp, 35 water, snow, etc.) in shorts, compression shorts, DriFit t-shirt (not compression), trail sneakers and PVC coated gloves and never got cold while on the trails. All of my buddies who wore compression tops were cold. My thought was that I was going to be wet pretty much the whole time so having the compression fabric constantly in contact with 100% of my upper body will wick away heat fast. Wore the gloves pretty much the whole time but ditched them at the monkey bars.

Drink water at every station you can. Eat a couple of bananas (supplied) throughout and pack a Larabar/Cliff Bar/etc into your compression shorts to eat part way through. I saw a lot of people cramping up and dropping out likely due to lack of water and nutrients.

Good luck.

Yes. That's it. The krinkly foil sheet that they hand out along the course.
