scared of backsliding on diet

buy in -
I am 5'6" and 44, down from 186# in 1/1/11 to 171# today and have dropped from 20% to 17% body fat (rope and choke method test) in the last 3 months. Goal is 160 by the end of the year. I do 3 WODs a week.

I have been on xfitting since January but only on paleo for 4 weeks. I've seen weight loss, energy levels improve, felling better and better about myself, blah blah blah - I am in.

The only deviation from paleo I allow myself is one spenda a day in my coffee (a man has to be civilized). I am probably too quick to eat an apple (no more than 2 per day) and need to eat fewer than three handfuls of paleo trail mix a day. But overall, I have made real strides and am seeing progress.

But I am scared of indulging/cheating, even in paleo treats. So when i came across this great looking ice cream recipe on My Paleo Life, I did not know what to do:

In a blender put:

•1/4 cup of frozen mango
•1/2 cup of frozen mixed berries (no need for ‘sugar’ as these are pretty darn sweet)
•1/2 cup of coconut milk
•1 tsp of vanilla
•1 tbsp of cocoa powder

seems simple enough, but I still think this is a cheat. Am I expecting too much of myself? Should I just go ahead and treat myself one a week to this kind of treat?

Interested in reactions and thoughts.

This IS why diets tend to fail, by restricting foods until you finally binge. Work some small "treats" into your daily diet, rather than avoiding them until you finally cave in. Eat a little bit of that ice cream every evening or something.

I'm with Seth.

Have a fruit smoothy and don't sweat it.

If you find yourself eating 10 or 12 of 'em a day, call us back.

Congrats on the progress!

Um.... lighten up. If you consider two apples a day "cheating" you are being way too hard on yourself.

There is no such thing as a cheat, just food you put in your mouth. Don't stress yourself by making it into anything more than that.

I would throw some whey powder in there myself and make it even better. But no, there's nothing wrong with some unsweetened fruit and cocoa powder on a somewhat regular basis.

Re: scared of backsliding on diet

This in my opinion is why diets fail. People look at them as having a beginning and an end.

They do something to lose fat and then go back to their original diet and holy crap the weight comes back.

It has to be a lifestyle and one you can live with, not something draconian that will make you break down after a month. Remember you are human.

Apples are allowed in the Paleo protocol. No need to regret eating 2 of them.

I am confused as to why you think this is a cheat. So, why is it?

It is berries and coconut milk. I don't get it????

Re: scared of backsliding on diet

Thanks to all for thoughtful and supportive comments. I guess my fear is inspired by:
1) I am finaly making weight loss progress
2) worry that eating even paleo sweets will be the first step on a slippery slope.

I full agree that i can't be a 100% denial person and expect to stick with it. I hope to make paleo eating a life choice, but unwiring 44 years of practice is hard.

i'm making coconut milk ince cream this weekend and we'll see how it tastes.

thanks again.
