Slam ball weight

I won a $75 gift certificate at a local competition this weekend to Rage Fitness, and I think I'm going to buy a slam ball. Never used one before though. Anybody have experience with them? If you were only going to buy one weight, which would it be? Thanks!

Re: Slam ball weight

I got a CFF 30# wall-slam-ball (dual function). I'm kinda disappointed because it deforms into a pumpkin rather easily, but I can just slam it a bunch of times on its pumpkin side and make it a ball again I guess. 30# is a good weight if you have to choose just one. You're a beast so I'm sure you could handle beefier ones, but I think one 30# ball slam is about as hard as one 20# wall ball, so it's easy to make balanced WODs with it. Also, if you're not a wall ball klutz you could use even a harder slam ball for wall balls, for which 30# is pretty beastly. Bigger ones are fun to play with too though! I would not get one lighter than 30#.

Re: Slam ball weight

Knowing your strength levels I would say to get at least a 30lb. Depending on what type of rep schemes you are going to want to use you may want to consider a 50lb or higher.

Re: Slam ball weight

That's interesting that you recommend 30 lb minimum, because at my CF, all of the WODs call for 20 lbs for men, and I'm not sure if I've seen the heavy hitters scale them up like they have for other exercises.

Having said that, if you're a beast, 30 is probably no problem.

For SLAM balls? I understand that 20# is the usual Rx for WALL balls, but I've seen slam ball WODs at certain gyms where the weight used is pretty much left to the individual. I'd love to have a 50# and a 70# slam ball, but I was pricing them recently and they are kinda spendy.

edit:

Kevin - I just went on Rage's website, and it looks like the "heaviest" slam ball you can buy for $75 is the 16#, after that you'll be coughing up some of your own coin to get a bigger size. The 50# goes for $153.95 and the 70# goes for $197.95.

OUCH

good luck.

Re: Slam ball weight

For SC/NC Sectionals last year, the men's Rx'd weight was 30 lbs. Women's was 20 lbs. So, I agree that you should look at 30 lbs or up.

Re: Slam ball weight

Thanks for the input everyone! After looking at the site, I can't really find anything I just have to have. If anyone wants to Paypal me $50, I'll send out the code for the $75 gift certificate. Just send me a PM. Thanks!
