soaking shredded coconut remove added sugar?

i went to 4 grocery stores today to find some unsweetened coconut flakes for a coconut pancake recipe and couldnt find any. so i ended up just buying the sweetened one. will soaking it in water help reduce the amount of added sugar? thanks

I have the same problem but, without knowing much about chemistry or any other information that may be pertinent in this matter, I would say no, that won't work. Seems too easy.

Re: soaking shredded coconut remove added sugar?

where have you guys looked? whole foods carries it in their bulk food section and it's shockingly cheap (at least in boston it is). I've also seen it in "normal" grocery stores in the organic food section, but it's usually insanely over priced.

If you guys don't have a whole foods handy, try www.tropicaltraditions.com (sfw) they have coconut sales all the time

I buy it in bulk (unsweetened) at Henry's. I have also seen it in "normal grocery stores" in the baking section.

Re: soaking shredded coconut remove added sugar?

ive searched safeway, QFC, a local supermarket, and the base commissary. each had about 4 brands of shredded coco all sweetened. its ridiculous. how exactly is it sweetened though? if sugar is just mixed in im hoping soaking it will take out most of it. 5g of sugar per 2 tbs is quite a bit

nearest Whole Foods is about 2.5 hours away. I live in the boonies.

soaking's probably not going to do it. sweetened vs unsweetened have completely different textures.
