What to do with a whole coconut?

Did the shopping tonight and bought a coconut. (yes, first time ever!)

will have a go at cracking the thing open tomorrow.

Firstly, is it worth trying to save the water? Is this good to drink as is, or could I save it and cook with it later?

Also, is there anything i can do with the coconut flesh other than eat it raw? Can it be added to cooking as part of a paleo meal?

...or should I just eat the thing and buy coconut milk to cook with?

Sorry if this all seems silly, just never bought or cooked with coconut before! (yes I have eaten it)

The water is good.

You can eat the fleshy white stuff.

Yes, you should get coconut oil as well.

Thanks for the links Steven. It led me to another article in there about raw whole coconuts too.

I'll crack it and drink whatever water I can catch, then eat the rest.

I'll buy some coconut oil and milk for cooking!

You could make coconut milk.

http://www.coconut-connections.com/coconut_milk.htmYOU MUST ANNOTATE ALL LINKS WHETHER WORK AND FAMILY SAFE.

You'll need more than one coconut to make it worth your while.

Re: What to do with a whole coconut?

I never had success cutting coconuts open. So I use my kettlebell. It's the only thing in my dorm room that'll work.

Coconuts are awesome. Drain the water, crack them, and you have enough food for half the day.
