Thumbs up Grass Fed Beef - The Price You Pay, Where You Get It, and How Long it Lasts, etc

I'm curious about those that buy Grass Fed Beef in bulk. Specifically, as the topic already states, I'm wondering a few things:

How much are you paying per pound?

What size order do you usually get? (Quarter, Half, Whole)?

What's the total cost of your order?

How much freezer space does it take up?

How long does that last you?

and finally, where are you buying it from, with a link if possible.

I think that further discussion of this topic will not only benefit myself and answer my questions, but also enlighten some others that may be wondering about these things.

I appreciate and look forward to your responses.

Thanks,
Paul

Re: Grass Fed Beef - The Price You Pay, Where You Get It, and How Long it Lasts, etc

As far as beef is concerned - usually we buy the ground beef & 1/4 lbs burger patties (same beef, just pressed into 1 lbs packages of 4 patties).

Usually we get a total of about 50-80 lbs of beef a month (it's not regularly scheduled so we order sometimes after 3 weeks & sometimes after 6).

Plus usually I get bacon, pork chops & chicken breast. All organic/pasture raised/grass fed etc - whatever applies.

Beef used to be $4/lbs and now it's $5/lbs. Pork chops & chicken - $5/lbs (possibly is going to be a bit more the next time I order). Bacon is $9/lbs. I also get whole chickens - those are $3-4/lbs ($16-20/per whole chicken).

We have a big stand up freezer I got from Craigslist for $150.

Usually we spend $350-600 per order.

You can the list of good local farms here - EatWild.com (WFS)
That's how we found the one we buy from - AlRosas.com (WFS)

I'll probably end up buying half cow or may be a whole cow/bison later this year but not sure where from yet.

Hope that helps

Leonid,

Thanks a lot. Anyone else out there?

I know about Eat Wild. I'm just want to get a comparison across this board of what everyone is paying, and how long its lasting.

Beef at $5/pound is a good price. At a local organic food store I can find uncured/organic bacon at $6/pound.

Also there is a bison farm close by that allows hunting, which equates to cheap bison meat/pound.

Hi.

I am new to cross fit. Are there benfits to grass fed in terms of supporting performance and body composition goals. Or, is it just a much healthier option?

Thanks.

Man, I really need to convince my wife to get a freezer.

Our grass-fed ground beef is $10/lb, let alone the flank steak and other deliciousness I consume.

I buy a lot of grass fed beef, both direct from a farmer and in store, as well as buffalo, pastured pork, etc.

But if you want cheap, go out and hunt deer, which even after the equipment and the license will be less than a few bucks a pound. or better still, get a hunter to give you some. When I get a deer or two, I am ALWAYS looking to give venison away.

Feeding grain to grass eaters, then eating their meat is one of the ways humans got their O3:O6 out of whack. The more grass fed stuff you eat, the easier it is to correct.

This is now happening with fish as well. Basically commercial farming is feeding all animals the same grain based diet which is no good.

Paul : more basic question.... you want to have it shipped to japan??????

cause i think the cost would be prohibitive, and questionable sanitary and
remember importing meat is subject to scrutiny by the host country and I think the japanese have banned us beef.
edit oops.. i saw a usmc tag... apo allows food shipping?

I've found (off of EatWild) a local farmer that sells it for $3.45/pound plus the cost of butchering. He will also butcher it how you want. I'm planning on ordering 1/4 cow, after I get a deep freezer!
