Grinding feeling and pain in shoulder

I can feel grinding pain (right where my bra strap lies) and hear a popping/clicking noise when I move my shoulder/arm. Since yesterday (did alot of KB swings) I have had shooting pain when I raise my arm. The pain isn't all the time, but sometimes I can't even raise my arm 6 inches. Any ideas?

Re: Grinding feeling and pain in shoulder

The pain being where the bra strap lies always makes me think AC Arthrosis.

Excuse my asking, but how old are you? Have you had any injuries to the shoulder in the past?

I'm 34, no other shoulder injuries or trauma. Also I notice that my fingers have the pins and needles feeling. Wonder if I need to see a doc?

Yeah, sounds to me as though you have 2 different things going on.

1. Shldr/ AC Arthrosis.

2. Compression neuropathy of the upper extremity. Possible carpal tunnel or cubital tunnel syndrome.

More than likely these are unrelated. You could see an orthopod who does upper extremity and kill 2 birds with one stone.

Re: Grinding feeling and pain in shoulder

Is this grinding in the scapula or is it actually the shoulder joint?

Re: Grinding feeling and pain in shoulder

Elizabeth,
Like Everette said, see an orthopod.....especially because you mention the pins and needles. If you are anything like me you will probably save yourself more time by seeing the doc vs hours googling. )

Keep in mind that you could have multiple things going on. I have the grinding and arhtrosis from and A/C seperation but I used to have numbness and tingling in my fingers from a totally differant issue. They could be linked, but perhaps not.

A good physical therapist could probably run some quick tests and point you in a good direction.

Re: Grinding feeling and pain in shoulder

I developed a painful, grinding/popping deal in my shoulder several years ago. That was more right along the front of the shoulder joint, and it turned out to be a labral tear (of the ever popular SLAP variety). In going through a misdiagnosis as rotator cuff issues and a subsequent MRI and surgery to correctly diagnose and fix the tear, I did a lot of reading into shoulder issues. The shoulder is a ridiculously complex joint; ligaments all over the place. Tons of tendons connecting in there. Huge range of motion (and resultingly flimsy connection of your arm to the rest of your body). And lots of opportunities for irritation, impingements, and the like.

Which is all to say that if you have good insurance and a sympathetic doctor, and there's any doubt about your diagnosis, I would really push for an MRI if the doc thinks it will help with the diagnosis. I blew three months in PT trying to correct the wrong condition, which wound up being surgical anyway. Major bummer.

Good luck with it, and hopefully it's something minor that works itself out!

Ortho! Now!

Lots of ice and rest while you're waiting for your appointment.
