Paleo Beer

I've been eating Paleo for about a month and feel great! I don't miss any of the garbage I had been eating. However, I love beer, especially Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

I drink in moderation, but most weekends, I will drink 5-10 beers over the course of the weekend.

How bad?

Thanks,

Tony

Re: Paleo Beer

Alcohol screws up your sleep and protein synthesis (i.e. ability to build muscle) and provides you with garbage carb calories. If drinking a few beers is the only non-Paleo thing you do during the week it won't hurt you too much and you're ahead of 98% of the US population, assuming your goals don't include winning next year's CF Games or just getting in peak condition in general. No one else can tell you whether having a few beers is more important than your fitness goals, that's gotta be your decision.

Re: Paleo Beer

I had a few "fall backs" and drank 2-3 times duringe the summer time.
needless to say it screws up everything.
You won't realize how much damage it does until you've stopped drinking and THEN started again.
These are two totally different worlds of work capacity.
The one sucks and the other is like driving a ferrari.
You need to choose which one.

Re: Paleo Beer

5 seems reasonable, but getting up near 10 seems a bit much especially if you're trying to make gains all week long.

Think of it this way. What is the return on investment in having 4 beers vs 2 on any given night? Are you really enjoying those last few beers or just drinking them because "that's what you do" on a weekend.

Sierra is a good beer.. Have one or two and really enjoy it.

Re: Paleo Beer

I'm going to paraphrase a friend of mine at the gym. I told him that I sometimes eat tiny candy bars that my boss keeps on hand and I think his advice applies to beer as well.

"Just sneak up on it with a spear, that makes it paleo."

The last part of that statement isn't true. A ton of people aren't on the Paleo diet and are still in outstanding physical condition.

Understood, Paleo isn't the only way to go, but garbage food and beer won't help your performance in any way...that was the point I was trying to make. I doubt there's many elite athletes in any physically demanding sport who drink excessively, and if they do it's obviously detrimental to their conditioning. I don't have any illusions of winning the Games or becoming a pro athlete so I'll have a few beers if there's a good reason to, just like I'll occasionally have a carne asada burrito, but I'm not going to pretend it's good for me or that I won't feel the effects in the gym if I have too many or do it too often.
