Paleo diet with cheese

I'm pretty much following Paleo principles with sometimes my cheat as having rice. However, I still dont understand why cheese and cottage cheese is frowned upon.

Arent they good sources of fat and protein?

Or is it the high calorie content.

Thanks

Re: Paleo diet with cheese

I struggled with the same question (I love cheese). Great post on why dairy products aren't recommended for the paleo diet.

Reading the book would be beneficial. Your library can get it for you if they don't have it.

Re: Paleo diet with cheese

Because caveman didn't drink cow's milk. Hence the term "lactose intolerant."

Re: Paleo diet with cheese

has to do with insulin response...although they have profiles very high in protein and fat, they elicit a large flux in insulin. Also, grain fed cow milk and cheeses cause a gluten reaction. If you go milk, get grass-fed imo

Re: Paleo diet with cheese

Most people have no problem with raw, grass-fed products........Do your own experimenting and go from there

Re: Paleo diet with cheese

i'm tired of hearing the "paleo man didn't have X, so paleo eaters don't eat it" answer. there are pretty good reasons for avoiding all the foods that the paleo diet tells you not to eat.

Crossfit 603's dairy manifesto is a great example of that.

fwiw, i didn't think i had any issues digesting dairy until i cut it out of my diet. My fat loss had stalled and dropping dairy (definitely making up the lost calories elsewhere) kickstarted it again. i was surprised

Re: Paleo diet with cheese

Goats milk is a good substitute. It has more nutrients and causes much less of an insulin spike (I've been told). Not 100% paleo, but like many have mentioned who cares. It surprisingly tastes better than cows milk (to me) if you pick the right brand. It is also suppose to have a near neutral acid/alkaline effect, as compared to the higher acidity in cows milk.

Re: Paleo diet with cheese

Dairy releases more insulin
Dairy is also a growth promoter. People will sometimes add milk to their diet to gain mass.

Also, on the note of protein in foods other than meats (nuts, beans, etc), they say not to count it as a protein source, because it doesn't hit the pancrease quick enough to release glucagon.

Here's a great Paleo website
