weighing raw meat while it's frozen..

does it weigh any differently if it's frozen or thawed? I have these frozen thighs that don't need to be thawed before cooking and I was wondering if I could just weigh them frozen before I cooked them.

I could weigh it after it's cooked and then specify that it's "cooked weight" but the scale gets a bit messier that way.

Why not do that? I just put down a piece of wax paper or aluminum foil on my scale and go to town. I figure I'm not eating it frozen or raw, so I might as well weigh it cooked. :P

Doesn't your scale have a zero button? Weighing raw meat directly on the scale gets pretty gross, too.

Put plate on scale. Zero scale. Add thing to be weighed. Repeat if desired: you can weigh your meat, veggies, etc. directly onto your dinner plate.

Just pick a way to measure it and be consistent with that measurement. When I used to wam I found it easier to do it before cooking, but the key is consistency really.

Changing the temp of something does not change it's mass.

But, depending upon the cooking medium, it will generally weigh less because the water will be cooked out. I underline weigh because weight and mass are different.

It's mass will certainly be different after cooking.

Re: weighing raw meat while it's frozen..

Personally, I just do some rough math at the store when I buy my meat. If I want 4 oz. cooked weight, I figure for slightly more than that raw. For example, if I'm buying a pack of six chicken breasts, I buy a pack that's a little under 2 pounds. They won't all be the same size, but it'll average out.

I'd do it after it was cooked if I weighed and measured stuff. A lot of the fat may have certainly melted off the meat causing it to lose weight and mass.
