Best way to get rid of chest congestion

It happens every year. I get a head cold, that a week later makes its way into my chest. I can't exercise, or do much of anything, because the congestion makes me gasp for air.

Anyone have any medicines, or old-timey recipes to get rid of this freaking annoying congestion?

Thanks

Re: Best way to get rid of chest congestion

Does it get any easier to breathe when you are in the shower? It could be that your sinuses are getting filled up. Steam can help loosen the mucus. My wife's doctor recommended Mucinex DM when she had the same problem, but the local drugstore didn't have it in stock. I have found that most over the counter meds are pretty much useless when it comes to this problem, but a long hot shower seems to help.

Steam helps a lot. So does time--sometimes healing just can't be rushed.

I wouldn't be too concerned after a week, but if it goes on longer than that you might talk to your doctor. I sometimes get what my doctor described as temporary exercise-induced asthma: the cold makes the bronchii have to work harder, and working even harder than that while exercising makes them spasm. Not fun.

There's one other thing you can try. If you actually have mucus in your chest, you can try having a friend slap you on the back while you are upside down. Do this after breathing in some steam to loosen up the dry stuff. Have a paper cup handy to spit into. I've never tried this, so I have no idea if it really works. I got the idea from an ER doctor who swears by it.

Huh... that sounds crazy enough to work. Of course I have too many friends that might get over zealous in hitting me in the back... I tried the steam thing last night with Mucinex Dm and it helped. I feel alot better this morning, but I am worn out; you know that feeling when you get over beind sick, and the relief makes you want to sleep more than anything.

If you want to go the OTC route.... Mucinex works wonders.

In addition to steam and mucinex, good old vicks vapo rub seems to help.

Re: Best way to get rid of chest congestion

I would try swimming a few laps at your local pool. I was a swimmer in HS and our season was during the winter. I would get sick in late December/early January but the high intensity swimming ( constantly breathing every third or fifth lap) would help loosen the mucus in my lungs. My coach thought I was dying on account of all the coughing. -MW
