Bacon on paleo

I searched the forum, google, yahoo, etc. and couldn't figure out a concrete answer...
What is the general rule for bacon on the paleo diet? Allowed, banned, in moderation? Can't seem to figure it out...some eat it, some don't....What's the rule?

Re: Bacon on paleo

Does it work for you? I think that's probably the only solid rule.
You'd have to eat it consistently after a period of consistently not doing so and measure all your indicators of bodily health at the beginning and the end of that period for a satisfactory answer.
I say eat it, because it's a beautiful (and natural) thing, but not to excess, as with anything. Excpt maybe eggs. Eat those every twenty minutes.

Re: Bacon on paleo

when i started doing paleo, i read the rule as "lean meats," which bacon certainly is not. I had turkey bacon every now and then as a substitute, until it occurred to me:

if a lifestyle/diet tells me that eating bacon is wrong...do i really want to be right?

i feel like that's how many crossfitters feel about it as well

Re: Bacon on paleo

I should have specified Turkey bacon...I don't really eat "real" bacon....90% of the time it's turkey bacon...I guess in regards to lean meats I guess turkey bacon would be slightly better than regular bacon

Re: Bacon on paleo

If you are crossfiting and eating Paleo (no grains/no sugars), than you should be able to eat all the bacon you want. I have 5 strips of bacon every morning, nothing fancy, just bacon with their best companion eggs.

Check out the bacon thread.

My own personal rule is, avoid bacon completely. My reasoning is not so much because it's a fatty meat, but rather it's rammed with preservatives (sodium nitrate) which is a great route to getting yourself cancer. Same probably applies to turkey bacon. Anything processed really. It was a revelation to me. When I first started Paleo/Zone, if I needed to put together something quickly, I would go for bacon and eggs. No longer. It kills people. What a bummer.

There are a number of bacon brands that are nitrate free now. Wellshire farms is very good, and even the whole foods 365 organic brand is nitrate free.

There you go. Sadly, in the UK, I have neither the time, the inclination or the funds to seek out such a thing.

Re: Bacon on paleo

I never managed to find Nitrate free bacon in the UK. Easy to find in the US. A little expensive but worth it. In my first two week in NJ Ive eaten a lot of nitrate free bacon.
