Hi,
Does any one know a simple routine to enable me to do Handstand push ups. At the moment Iam doing 30 secs static standing against a wall for 4 sets 3xweek. I can do 1 rep at the moment with this routine. |

matt- read the Grease the groove article pavel has over at www.dragondoor.com and www.cbass.com...I think it is about pullups. These are excellent protocols to increase things like HSPU. Essentially, dont go to failure very often...add range of motion as you are able, train as frequently as yu can without burnig out/injury.

For handstand pushups you will want to do em all the time. Work them against a wall, but facing the wall so that your hands are on the floor and your toes touch the wall. This will ensure better positions. Eventually you will touch the wall lighter and lighter, and will be able to get em free standing.

Man they are tough!! I've been trying for months, now I have a set of parallettes, and I still can't do them without a sturdy wall around!

In terms of many gymnastics skills, working on something for months is nothing. Be patient, keep working on it. Think about how many handstand pushups a high level gymnast does just in the course of their normal practice, not even considering working them for conditioning. Work free handstands whenever you get a chance too. You gotta spend a LOT of time on your hands to get a solid handstand.
