What is a crossfitter?

I'm interested in everyone's opinion here. I don't think crossfitter is just one thing. I don't think it's a 3 minute Fran for everyone. Or a diet of veggies, meats, nuts and seeds. To some it may be following the WOD 3 on 1 off, to others it may be incorporating functional movements into thier workout. Does it just mean somebody is in some way a part of the community? There's no wrong answer here.

I called somebody a crossfitter the other day and got to thinkin'...What makes somebody a crossfitter?

Re: What is a CrossFitter?

I would say a crossfitter is someone who is passionate about fitness, open minded to new training ideas and trains function of aesthetics with the purpose of bettering their life from the inside out, not the outside in.

Re: What is a CrossFitter?

To me a CrossFitter is simply someone who regularly follows the mainpage or an affiliate WOD. CrossFit is a brand. I'm pretty sure Coach doesn't want every facility out there that there (even the ones that are passionate about fitness, open minded, training for function, etc.) advertising that they offer CrossFit. If what they are doing isn't CrossFit, how can the people doing it be CrossFitters? I don't think they can. We can't have our cake and eat it too.

...and doesn't mind being sore. Everywhere. For days, months, and years.

I think you pretty much summed it up though; nicely said.

Re: What is a CrossFitter?

I would add that a CF'er is someone who follows the principals of training functional movements, executed at high intensity, that are constantly varied if not random.

It has been said before that the mainpage WOD is an expression of CrossFit.

I don't think you have to follow main page or an affiliate to be a CrossFitter.

You just have to stick to the above three principals.

Re: What is a CrossFitter?

Andrew, I've seen that said before; and I've seen the opposite said. This debate isn't new. My view on this is: People did varied, intense, functional fitness training before CrossFit. Were those people doing CrossFit before Coach was? I would say no. CrossFit is different (and, in my view, likely better) than what they were doing. Assuming you agree that Coach is the founder of CrossFit, in your view what makes it different than what came before?

Re: What is a CrossFitter?

There are two things that can make you a CrossFitter:

1. You are training or have in the past* trained for increased work capacity over broad time and modal domains. Only people currently training for this goal are CrossFitting otherwise you can say you have CrossFitted.

2. You participate in the CrossFit community. Which can be at minimum of just posting on the comment section on the main page or by going on the message board and you MUST have visited atleast 1 affiliate.

*If it's been more than a year since you trained for increased work capacity over broad times and modal domains and you have no connection with the CrossFit community, you are no longer a CrossFitter.

Just my 2 cents...

I don't really understand people's fascination with soreness. It doesn't mean you had a good workout and it doesn't mean you're improving. Just an unfortunate side effect. IMO soreness should try to be avoided.
