Knee Pain and Jumping

Hi!

I was practicing double unders a couple of days ago until my knee made a popping noise. It started getting stiff, as if I had just cracked my knuckles. I couldnt jump without pain, so I stopped, but I was able to complete the WOD (Helen- scaled to 1 pood, jumping pullups, time: 10:43).

Here's the question: I rested the knee for 2 days. I can do everything EXCEPT jump. (Which sucks because I need to practice my double unders) Has anyone else had this happen before?? If so, can you please tell me what's going on? My trainer thinks maybe its a bursa sac that popped...if so, how long does it take for the soreness to go away so i can start jumping again? There is no swelling or stiffness...just a sharp pain when i land from jumping.

Re: Knee Pain and Jumping

Ok. I found the answer. It seems I have a "mild" case of jumper's knee. Here's a nifty little website that gave some good info.

no sense in stopping now!

Re: Knee Pain and Jumping

Keith,

Doubtful it is jumpers knee. Jumpers knee is another term for patellar tendinopathy which is typically an over use injury that occurs over time. "Popping" is usually a symptom of ligamentous or meniscal damage. Did the knee swell on you? Does it bother you to do a deep squat. Pain on the inside/outside of the knee?

Respectfully,
Clayton

Re: Knee Pain and Jumping

Thanks Clayton for the clarification.

I have had no swelling and I can do a deep squat just fine. The pain and initial stiffness was centered around my kneecap; espically painful when I pressed down on it. I have been Crossfitting a little over a month, and I have been practicing double unders almost daily (i probably should have been giving myself more rest) with the goal to work myself up to 10 consecutive double-unders.

Today, the knee feels fine (still no jumping, though). I may try jumping again on Monday...

Suggestions?

Re: Knee Pain and Jumping

Its difficult to say...

I would try to take a couple days of rest and see how that goes. Watch for things like joint line tenderness or swelling that might occur. Sometimes w/ a meniscal injury swelling might not occur right away, it could take another activity to irritate it and make it swell. If things don't improve...see an MD...PT might be in the cards for you. You could also have a patellofemoral issue.
