5 Finger Shoes and Shin Guards for Krav

I have recently started using 5 fingers in Krav Maga, and I absolutely love them, but I am having issues finding shin gaurds that are effective and comfortable to use in conjunction with them...

any suggestions?

Re: 5 Finger Shoes and Shin Guards for Krav

Two things...

First, I use the Fairtex shinguards and love them. I go barefoot in MMA and kickboxing and never have a problem with them.

Second, I have very limited knowledge of Krav Maga, but the place where I currently train MMA/kickboxing is a Krav Maga school mainly. They emphasize for the KM classes to wear running shoes so it resembles real life situation. Do you feel like the 5 Fingers are true to that idea? Or does your school emphasize that even? I don't really have an opinion on it - just curious because it came up in a kickboxing class one day because the teacher had to remind the KM students to take their shoes OFF for kickboxing! lol!

I'm with Becca. Both on the shinguards and the shoes. Why? I prefer our people train in the shoes they are most likely to be wearing if anything ever goes down.

Re: 5 Finger Shoes and Shin Guards for Krav

Thanks for the reply guys!

Here is the issue I was running into. I have been wearing 5 finger religiously for over a year, but continued to train Krav in cross-trainers.

But I almost exclusively wear 5 fingers, so almost any situation where I will have to defend myself, will find me wearing 5 fingers... hence why I started training in them.

Krav recommends these shin guards for protection in conjunciton with shoes:

http://www.kravmaga.com/store/images...in%20guard.jpg

The bottom flap is velcroed to the laces, and no laces on 5 fingers.

I tried more traditional barefoot guards like the fairfax, but found that the foot strap put a lot of pressure on the ridges of my feet due tot he extra material and rubber soles. So they didnt work either.

How safe do you think it would be to cut the foot band and sew on a longer piece of elastic banding in the foot area on traditional guards? Would this hold up to abuse and sparring?

Re: 5 Finger Shoes and Shin Guards for Krav

I can't stand those shin guards you have pictured - Krav Maga wants you to buy them because they sell them and they've got a deal with Rev Gear, not because they're the best out there. That foot flap in particular never struck me as a very good design.

Remember that shin guards are NOT for YOU - they are for your sparring partner's protection. If you plan on kicking very hard then you want to invest in decent ones and be kind to your sparring partners. I find those super light ones and the ones that look like big white socks to be unsatisfactory.

The 5 Fingers are actually substantial enough that putting the Fairtex guards on uncomfortable?

Re: 5 Finger Shoes and Shin Guards for Krav

Rev gear now has a pro versions that are lot better than the ones pictured.
http://www.revgear.com/product/896/shin_guards

My main thing i look for in a shin guard is that the foot pad covers my entire feet/toes and its thick.

there's nothing like smashing the top of your foot into your opponents elbow when trying to round kick him to his ribs....

Becca, what Krav school do you train at?

James - Yeah, I noticed those on their website, they look much nicer! I train at the West LA school. I don't take KM though - I do kickboxing and boxing there mainly and once in a while a BJJ class.

Re: 5 Finger Shoes and Shin Guards for Krav

We have a pair of those rev gear professionals at my school, and are the ones I have been trying.

I havent tried them with Sprints yet, but with the KSO's the foot elastic was way too tight and put a lot of pressure on my foot due to the rubber ridges of the vibram soles.

Trying them with Sprints on Saturday, going to try to feed my foot through the guard elastics first and then put the Sprints on.

If worse comes to worse I may have to invest in a different minimalistic shoe...

I have heard good things about H streets and martial arts, that may be my answer.

I go to phase "A" training in LA (Krav Instructor school) soon, and finding a good shoe/guard combination is imperative.

Re: 5 Finger Shoes and Shin Guards for Krav

Nice! seems like there's a lot of us thats are in Krav also doing Crossfit.

I teach here at the national training center in Sherman Oaks. I've been making the other instructors here do more Crossfit workouts and they are slowly seeing the light

In kind of the same subject, how come no one from Krav maga do any combative/self defense videos like Tony Blauer does in the video section? Does he have some kind of a exclusive affiliation with Crossfit?

Just wondering since i know a lot of Crossfit Affiliates are also Krav maga centers.

Chris,

I'm sure you'll be doing some of the Phase training here in Sherman Oaks so be sure to ask for me when you come out.

Becca,

Kick Marcus in the balls for me when you see him next!
