Are Gyro's Healthy?

Was wondering if anyone know about Gyro's, the meat at least, and if it was healthy. It is composed of half beef, and half lamb.

Re: Are Gyro's Healthy?

id venture to guess that the meat itself is probably pretty good. that sauce they put on gyros will pwn you though.

But it's sooooo good!

I'm finding that it is insanely difficult to maintain a healthy diet. I need to find some more motivation to stop eating out, and create a meal plan!

Maybe w/ one cheat meal(read: gyro) a week...

Re: Are Gyro's Healthy?

Real gyros made from ground or whole lamb chops that layered spiced and cooked on a spit is excellent, basically you are eating lamb chops. The "wheel of meat" type that is a solid block that is found at most fast food joints is processed garbage (IMHO). Good for a cheat day if you must have it....

Re: Are Gyro's Healthy?

Im greek myself, so naturally, I know where to find the real thing =) As far as Taziki (sauce) I am not really a fan of it, so when I order mine, its just meat and peta bread, if I even get the bread. My only concern was, the meat seems kind of greasy, or maybe its just spices, etc... If Gyro's are good for you (real ones), then I must be in luck!

Re: Are Gyro's Healthy?

The gyro sauce is mostly yogurt right? Seems like as long as they make in in house, instead of out of a jar, that it should be pretty good.

Re: Are Gyro's Healthy?

Have a Grass Fed lamb in the freezer, planning on grilling a couple of Lamb shanks next week or so.

I also have lbs of ground lamb, which I make into patties. Nice combo is 3lbs Lamb, 1 lb pork. Makes great burgers.

Yep, semiproper tatziki sauce is yogurt with garlic, cucumber, and maybe some mint and feta. It's pretty healthy stuff. Somewhat the same with the meat--in theory, pretty healthy.

Now what you get at a fast-food gyro/kebab joint with a rolled loaf-o-meat held together by debatable binders and squirty garlic-flavored sauce may not have much to do with the above, but that's your call!
