Best Pistachio Brand?

I have tried 4 different brands of pistachios in the last couple of months. Suprisingly, the best ones are always from Wal-Mart (Sam's Choice brand). They are better by a substantial margin than the other brands I have tried.

Does anyone have a "go-to" brand of pistachios?

Pistachios can vary in taste drastically (for those who don't eat them often)

Re: Best Pistachio Brand?

Living in CA, I can get locally grown from fruit/veggie/nut stands. Those are the best. Don't they grow Pistachios in TX too?

Re: Best Pistachio Brand?

Yes in fact they do, and that's what caused me to post this. I have tried 2 local (packaged and at the store though) brands and was not satisfied. Maybe if I can get straight to the source...

They can differ drastically in taste? I know only four kinds of tastes: good, rancid, burnt and soggy.

Alicia,

I think you answered your own question.

To humor you I will rephrase my question that is the topic of the thread

What is the best pistachio brand? (that does not sell rancid, burnt, or soggy TASTING pistachios)

I'd be willing to bet that the one's from Wal-Mart have more salt on them.. . . .Salt is a flavor enhancer (if used correctly).

I started eating Macadamia nuts raw (a buddy of mine gave me 6 pounds!) and now the roasted/salted ones in the store taste funny.

Re: Best Pistachio Brand?

I hate the fact that you may be right about the salt. Side note - I've been trying to find unsalted sunflower seeds with the shell.

Guess I should have mentioned that I always buy them (sunflower seeds and pistachios) with the shell. I think it prevents you from eating too many (even though a serving size is 49 pistachios which is incredible) Great nutritional profile as well.

Re: Best Pistachio Brand?

Greg I find that having to de-shell prevents me from eating too many too!

Unsalted sunflower seeds with shell - try searching at oriental supermarkets. They also may have melon seeds.

Adam I'm jealous of you! Macademias are so costly!!

Re: Best Pistachio Brand?

If you can find them in the States, Iranian pistachios are generally held to be the gold standard. Unfortunately, despite a relaxation of the embargo during the Clinton administration, there's a 300% import tax on them. So even if you do find them, expect to pay through the nose. I'm not sure how badly you want good pistachios, though.

Here's a good online source for quality and price of various other types:

Yes, nutsonline. I assure you it's safe for work and family.
