Brian, I would check out Louie Simmons West Side BB site or Dave Tate's site. They are wholly against sucking in the stomach prior to a heavy lift, they actually teach pushing the stomach out. I think you have a valid point in people needing rehab, but to transfer this to the athlete, IMO not the way to go. Next time your doing a dynamic movement try to activate your TVA by scuking in your stomach) and keep it activiated!

Perhaps I am just a freak of nature or something..I have been performing 'extreme' exercises during the past 5 years to increase core strength, while maintaining TVA activation.. Perhaps I have developed an 'abnormal' neuro-muscular connection. I practice TVA activation while driving, walking, washing dishes and training, etc. I am able to maintain during dynamic movement. I guess I am a 'freikazoid'.

Larry, rehab / prehab is the only setting I think it's needed, I don't think people need to do the little TVA exercises forever.

I don't have the lab Siff had, or the clinic Chek has, but I think I might have a passable TVA function test. Have them do a straightlegged situp on the floor with their feet anchored and their shirt off. If they flatten their back (hollow) to the floor a little at the start, the TVA is doing its job. If their lower back actually curves more at the beginning, it's likely they'll tell you situps hurt their back. The latter needs some TVA work.

I also wonder if the Ab-mat is just a crutch for the TVA impaired.

I put a lot of stock in what the WSB gang says, but I think their practices are geared towards squatting maximal weights in meets with full battle gear. Do olympic lifters that squat raw day the same thing?

For your consideration:

Idalberto Aranda Puros Dimas

I've never pulled in or pushed out, but then I've never squatted any bar that was bending quite like that...

Brian, Interesting comment about the AbMat. Have you ever used an AbMat? Due to my core training methods and intensity I am definitely not TVA impaired. The AbMat was one of my primary training tools for preparing to attempt the sit-up record. CF is one of the endorsers of the product. I also endorse the product. My strength sky-rocketed after training with the product.

Skip, I have used an improvised pad that seems similar to the ab mat. It seems that it just supports the lower spine for you. My thinking is, this makes it unnecessary to first contract the TVA before pulling with the hip flexors and rectus. The lower spine is stabilized passively because it is kind of splinted against the mat.

Note that "TVA impaired" could mean weak TVA, or slow / non-functioning TVA. That is, the TVA could be strong, but the coordination to contract the TVA first (before rectus / psoas), lacking.

I don't know, maybe the situp is a better exercise with the Abmat. It just seems like you ought to be able to do the movement without the external support.

Brian, the Abmat just allows you to do a full sit-up from extension, on the floor (kind of like a swissball, but a full sit-up instead of a crunch). I don't think it has anything to do with a weak TVA. Chek is a personal trainer, his "clinic" and "patients" kind of throw up red flags for me. Plus any guy who advocates weighted squats on a swissball...I don't know!

Here's an incredible deep sqaut/TVA drill w/ a BOSU

http://media.putfile.com/MVI_120788

One of the few ab moves, along with L sit pullups that I actually still feel the next day.

The only thing wrong with Matt is the marketing. Hindu sqauts are great, as are asimov squats, dragon twists etc...TOOLS. The stuff Matt and Atomic are marketing have been used for a thousand years (The Wrestler's Body), stone locks etc...

"The only thing wrong with Matt is the marketing."

Honestly, Bill, with that whole deal with Maxwell's student and Furey, and you still think he's ok?
