I just joined a gymnastics class last monday, and having a blast, to say the least. Thanks to my "version" of crossfit(same, just replaced weightlifting with pistols and plyos and running/rowing with kickboxing heavy bag) I have come real far after three nights.
My wrist has gotten way better as of a few weeks ago when a massage therapist pointed out that I need to strengthen the extensor muscles in the hand, wrist and forearms. Since I've been doing that, I can do handstands and handstand pushups!!! yee-haw! Since Im not "crippled" anymore, I really wanna get as good as I possibly can with gymnastics. I've come and gone from sports, but I don't recall any being this awesome/addicting. I happen to have a 300 pound olympic weightset, and might order a power cage, Unless weightlifting would interfere with gymnastics progression, even weightlifting in the WOD? If I were to dedicate to gymnastics, I could either do my version of the WOD, or the WOD as RX'd. Im only contemplating the volume of weightlifting involved in the WOD, as it could add too much mass and thus, making gymnastics skills harder. Classes are mon-wed-and fri. I was thinking of doing my conditioning(wod) on tuesdays, thursdays, and perhaps saturdays if Im not too wiped out by the weekends. Any thoughts/advice? Cheers Roy |

Same here, Eric. I've gotten a lot stronger, fitter and even healthier, but no bigger.
My body composition has changed remarkably, particularly in the last 3 months, since starting the Zone and giving away vegetarianism; but I still weight the same amount as I have for what seems like forever. I just plain don't eat enough to grow any bigger; just enough to keep me going at what I hope is my best. I've just last night gone to my 3rd adult gymnastics class and I haven't found the WOD intefering with the gym class at all. I was a bit worried about the WOD yesterday (hang cleans + 140 pullups) because that is a lot of pullups, but 3 hours later in gym class, I barely noticed I'd done any pullups earlier in the day. Like many people have said, if you build up the intensity slowly, there is no reason that any person should not be able to handle the WOD as Rx'd and participate in their sport of choice. And you've been around here for longer than I have, Roy, so you should have no problem. |

The way the WOD is modeled it really won't put on weight like most weight lifting programs. You may want to adjust the WOD a little to keep more gymnastics specific movements (presses and the like) in your conditioning but that's more for working technique when fatigued than anything else. The WOD is a bit more leg heavy than most gymnastics conditioning programs. Don't worry too much about the WOD putting on excess weight, just determine what your goals are, see how you are progressing and adjust things if necessary.
