The Third World Squat
Solid, basic informative article posted at T-Nation.
Worth the read, as many post questions regarding flexibility and Squats, i.e. OHS, Front and A-A depth. Since it's T-Nation, be aware, people in skimpy clothes, which is not a bad thing. Not W/F/S!! http://www.t-nation.com/readArticle....dra?id=1856085 |

Re: The Third World Squat
Excellent article. My buddy (who got me started on Crossfit) has been getting into a deep squat like this when he changes his son's diapers. He's told me that he has noticed a difference in flexibility and squatting strength. I'm going to have to start using this position more throughout my day. Right now, my squats are definitely not low enough during my workouts.

Re: The Third World Squat
I've practiced deep squatting for years in daily life. As a result, I naturally go deeper with weights than I can push back out of! LOL.

Re: The Third World Squat
Yeah every able bodied 2 year old in the world can do that. Unfortunately our "advanced" society has introduced more and more ways to be stagnant.

Re: The Third World Squat
Mark Sisson, of Marks Daily Apple fame, refers to this as the "Indigenous Man Stretch".
As a father of 3 sub 10yr olds I glow with pride as I see all of them huddled in a circle in their perfect little squats while they play with their little action figures. I tell them to never lose the ability to do what they are doing. They just look at me funny and get back to playing. I've been practicing this squat for a few years now and find it's a great antidote to the "flexibility killing, adhesion forming" practice of sitting for hours in a desk chair. When I do get around to playing golf, I squat down like that to line up my putts, and invariably one of my playing partners will remark how his knees would explode if he even attempted that position (we're all only in our 30's). So sad... |

Re: The Third World Squat
All weight training, done properly, should build flexibility. For example, when doing a dip you should go to the point where your fists are nearly in your armpits. Things like this effectively build a great range of motion and strength in those ranges of motion. That's why guys like Grimek had outstanding flexibility.

Re: The Third World Squat
It's not really just in the "third world" (also known as LDCs...), pretty much everywhere except Europe and North America.
Here's an oldy but a goody on the exact same topic - "The Asian Squat" (work and family safe): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWTmg4dHiKg |
