Neck Pain

I'm new to Crossfit and still learning. Yesterday, I was doing pull-ups without any problems. Later in the evening, I started experiencing pain half way down my neck down into the shoulder, only on my right side. It was really bad when I woke up in the middle of the night in pain. I used to experience the same kind of pain when I would do any type of shoulder exercises with my arms over my head. Does anyone know what may cause this and/or experience the same thing?

Re: Neck Pain

It sounds like you overworked a little bit, probably just not used to so many pullups yet!

Is it muscle pain, nerve pain, or something else maybe? Could be a pulled muscle, pinched nerve, or something else.

How long does it take to go away based on previous experience?

Hopefully you feel better soon!

Re: Neck Pain

The pain usually dissipates after a couple of days. When I did the shoulder exercises, I noticed that the delayed onset pain would develop when I really pushed to get the last few reps. The problem is that without an immediate signal that I've gone too far, it's hard to gauge my threshold.

Re: Neck Pain

I'm dealing with the same thing right now and I think mine comes from strained/tight lower trapezius or rhomboids. I have some pretty brutal knots back there and even though the muscles aren't located where the pain seems to be, having someone massage these areas helps.

On a side note. I have only experienced this pain after training hard after a break from training or when unaccustomed to really heavy lifting overhead.
