Why do people supplement with Fish Oil?
I know the health benefits. But i'm wonderign why you would supplement if all the EFA's you need are contained in regular Zone eating?. Do you take fish oil because you want to add more calories from the best possible source? Are you useing that for your fat block instead of olive oil and almonds? Thanks in advance for responses

Re: Why do people supplement with Fish Oil?
Zone eating does not provide omega-3 fatty acids in and of itself. You have to select sources that actually contain the omega-3's.
Fish oil is a good source of n-3s, so that is why we take it. What made you think that the Zone provides all the EFA's you need? |

Re: Why do people supplement with Fish Oil?
In reading Mastering the Zone Sears says that if you eat Salmon or Halibut once or twice a week then there is no need to supplement with Cod Liver Oil. I see supplementing mentioned alot here sooooo I was wondering why. And more self servingly should I be doing it

Re: Why do people supplement with Fish Oil?
1 - My skin dries out and gets mighty itchy, red spots and all. I take fish oil, it doesn't do that.
2 - While I love fresh fish, I don't get allot in my diet 3 - Yes, calories 4 - Natural lubricant in the GI tract. |

Re: Why do people supplement with Fish Oil?
Salmon and Halibut don't provide Cod Liver Oil, but they do provide omega 3 fats. Eating them 2x a week is good, but not great. Supplementing makes up the difference.
Fish oil is different than Cod Liver Oil. Cod Liver oil is high in vitamin D, with some vitamin A, and some Omega 3 fats. Fish Oil only has omega 3 fats, but it has more than cod liver oil per unit volume. Most of us don't count oil supplements of any kind as a Zone fat block. Most of us use the cheapest fish oil you can buy, which is usually Kirklands at Costco for about 2.5 cents per 1g caplet. Generally you take 5-10 caplets per day. |
