I belong to a Box gym (we're trying to get a C.F. gym started here in San Antoni) and have been stopped 3 times during WOD's. Most recently I was doing wall balls (I brought my own Dynamax ball) and they got upset about the wall I was using. (It was isolated down a hallway.) I convinced them it was far better than throwing it at a post, which they suggested. They agreed, but it ruined the time for the WOD. Another time I was doing clean and jerks with 90lbs over my head and some little kid is running around and nearly got under the barbell as I"m bring it down. I complained and the gym guy told me to use lighter weight!

Crossfitters are a self-selectd group. It's foreign to others. Many people are uncomfortable around things, ideas, etc foreign to them.

Also, from a business point-of-view, crossfit stresses the facility and potentially can cost them money. The soccor mom readying Red Book while walking on the treadmill is much more safe and hence profitable.

explain to them that their first sign is sexist and patronising, and the kind of rubbish that may just have been deemed acceptable at the turn of the 20th century, not the 21st...

Alicia,
Yes,CrossFit Sydney Crew gets it all the time.In fact they once put up a sign warning against performing Balistic Moves, obviously aimed at our little group.
Now they tend to(pretend)ignore us.

Ignore it and wait till they take any issues up with you personally.

Kenneth, if you dropped the weight on the kid’s head you could have replied by saying, “he should have had a harder head.” But seriously, this just shows how some gyms would rather go after the wrong people rather than discipline the kid or the parent for allowing the kid to run around loose. It’s the old “put a band aide on the problem instead of fixing the symptom” routine. At least at my local gym they will not allow kids under 14 in the weight area.

You should see the looks I get when I use the inside track for walking lunges with DBs. You’d thought I was running around butt naked with my hair on fire or something.

Most gyms are there to first make money and keep their insurance costs low.....actual fitness is a long second....

About 3.5 years ago, Eric was invited to stop working out in the Crossfit manner at the neighborhood gym he went to; some woman complained that she was going to get hurt due to his workouts.

It's great to have a local affiliate now! Now the stares come from outside the windows in.

Gyms would be out of business if people actually got fit....so they want to make sure everyone stays unfit.
