I'm really interested in AF bar. So you can kip on this bar? I have no place to learn the kip and was thinking this would be a good idea for me. I do realize it would be more of challenge since it moves.
Do you have any Vids of kipping on it? |

Martin,
Off hotel fire escapes? Brother, if you pull that off, please take a picture! I'd love to see it! Jennifer, The kip is very doable, although it is somewhat muted due to the dynamic nature of the bar. The closer you hang it to the support, the less it moves. I don't have video right now, but that's a heck of an idea. Let me see what I can do. We're going to use the AF Bar this weekend during my crew's Sunday Park Workout--I'll try to get some action footage! At the very least, I should be able to post a frame by frame at http://www.againfaster.com. Look for the pictures on Monday! Thanks for the kind words guys! Best, Jon |

I just had to comment about doing olympic lifts with this bar. If you look at the bar trajectories for the C&J and snatch, you will see that they are not straight lines. This is not saying your product isn't useful for other things, but I don't think it's optimal for olympic lifting.

Jonathan,
You are correct. The respective bar paths on the C&J and the Snatch are not straight lines. Nonetheless, they exhibit very little horizontal displacement when performed correctly. Ideally, the bar does not travel outside of the base created by the feet being placed directly under the hips. This base is approximately the length of your foot and as wide as your landing stance. The Again Faster Bar (with chains, of course) exhibits some very definite behavior when the bar path is outside of the base. Namely, it sways a ton. This is not the case when the Bar stays in the proper path. Chain movement is muted in this instance. I believe the best way to learn the O-lifts is to seek out and retain a qualified coach, attend a USA Weightlifting or Crossfit Oly Certification, and to practice ad nauseum with a solid barbell. The AF Bar remains useful as a tool for self-diagnosis of improper form. You won't need an instructor to point out your "reverse curl" or your "jump back", because the Bar will be busy trying to rip itself out of your hands every time you miss a pull. We discovered this trait quite by accident--it wasn't my original intention when building the gear. Again, the Bar is not a substitute for a good 'ol fashioned barbell and bumpers. It just happens to be useful in the pursuit of a good pull and stability in the bottom position. Best, Jon |

I did it when I was in Dublin this past spring. The only gear I took with me was my jump rope. Other than that I did pull-ups off of my hotel's fire escape, off of tree limbs (commando pull-ups) and on these big poles on the street (my avatar). I also worked out with some big rocks from the hotel courtyard, did jumps up onto a low stone wall and did towel pull-ups using a cheap towel that I bought over there looped over a beam that was sticking out the side of the building. Talk about training in an austere environment! All of these workouts were performed outside in the rain. On my last day there I realized there was a gym about a block away from my hotel. I had to laugh. |

Here it is Jen! I hung the Bar during the Again Faster Weekly Workout. This is me, cranking out kipping pullups a few minutes after finishing a mixed set of 101 Pullups, 96 Beck's Burpees, 96 V-ups, and 96 Overhead Squats. I couldn't find any other volunteers.
:pokey000: We had a few technical difficulties, culminating in a power surge that fried my (very old) digital camera. Please forgive the 90 degree rotation. For optimal viewing, place your left ear on your left shoulder after the title screen. Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djF-2LLBko0 Jerry, your AF Bar is on the way! I'd love to see some (decent) video! Best, Jon (Message edited by again_faster on September 24, 2006) |
