I dunno...

I've seen pics of soldiers improvising jerry cans and a pipe to workout but they REALLY don't have a choice in the matter.

think it might be a good idea to just buy one. Even if its a cheap "Golds Gym" bar from Wallyworld.

i need it olymoic weight as i just bought some plates but just wanted a cheap thicker bar. just wondering if standard steel pipe would be stong enough, i would only need to put at the most 400 lbs., on a rare occasion. mostly 300.

Darren, I have used steel pipe for dumbell handles and it worked ok, don't know how this would work as a barbell.

I once used plumbing pipe to make a fat barbell. Bolted on a couple of cheap collars. Worked pretty good.

I saw a 7' Oly bar at Walmart the other day...it was like $30 if I remember correctly, maybe $50. Yes one gets what one pays for, but its got to be better than a pipe, maybe not...
