Play with this. You can measure your run or bike routes or you can just zoom from outer space to your neighborhood. You can click and drag the map to move it around and go for a few thousand mile dive in seconds. Pretty slick.

You can also try route ruler (I think it's routeruler.com). You download any map (as long as it has a scale), and then you can plot different routes, etc. It's pretty cool, especially for a free program.

If you do a search of the boards, you might find the original thread where I read about it.
