Hunting Season Is Around The Corner

On October 1st, my favorite day of the year will be here. The first day of duck season in Maine.

Any other duck hunters here? Anyone enjoying an early teal season?

Deer season is only a few weeks away as well.

I think this would be a good spot for posting pics and recipes as they are available.

Re: Hunting Season Is Around The Corner

No early teal season here, but we get under way around the 3rd weekend in October with all the waterfowl. Its been dry, too, so not many resident ducks this year, and upland birds are scarce as well due to lack of cover. Migrants won't come down until it starts getting cold & windy up north.

Might have to visit my buddy in TX for a teal shoot, if we don't see any ducks in the first couple weeks...

Renee, if you can get Downeast, the ducks will be on the table. I still have moose in the freezer as well. No guarantee on deer though, they are few and far btwn in Maine.

Ben, we are starting to see the ducks flying in early numbers here already! I hope it doesn't get too cold too quick though. A number of years have seen a sudden dip in temps and then all the woodies and teal head for Georgia!

Re: Hunting Season Is Around The Corner

Everett, I think we'll both be dealing with unusual weather patterns for a while... Here in Northern CA, our summer weather is increasingly Sept, Oct, Nov and we don't see any ducks (well besides teal, wigeon, and a few spoonies) until after Thanksgiving. Need a couple freezes in eastern Washington before they really start to push down, and the season's halfway over by then. Its been frustrating for 7 or 8 years now. Especially since numbers are up in nearly every species in the Pacific flyway - they just need to change the dates!

Good luck to you in your openers!

A local writer that has been featured on Andrew Zimmern's BIZARRE FOODS has enlisted my help with trying new recipes and in obtaining seaducks for her to experiment with. That should be fun too. She is preparing another wild-game recipe book.

Some Duck, little Moose, and you're shacking up, dang, I thought you Eastern girls waited until the second date before..........

Tell ya what Renee; I got flocks of Canadian geese(crop rats) hanging our around our lake, I'll kill the whole bunch of them, toss in some deer venison, buy ya some killer chocolate, kick the dogs out of my room, forget that couch crap, and "game on".

Now, who's got a better offer?
