Strengthening the core

Hi. I've noticed that when I'm doing overhead presses my form is awful due to weak core muscles.

What exercises train my core muscles best? This is a limiting factor for me and something that I want to improve quickly.

L sit seems like a good exercise, deadlift improves core too. What else is there that I should do? (I'm brand new to CF)

Regards / Mike

Re: Strengthening the core

I'm a fan of the l-sit. I usually throw a couple of minutes of the l-sit before a metcon. Or try doing k2e (knees to elbows) during your warmup.
A few others yo may want to throw in front of the wod
-evil wheel or ab roller
-corkscerw (one of my fav's)
- toe touches with a med ball

And just keep doing the oly lifts and ohs eventually it will improve. Just don't over do it and throw too much before a heavy lift as that will challenge your core as well.

Squats of course, of course.

Is there any alternative for GHD situps? I don't have the equipment for those.

The Ab mat is an excellent tool for sit-ups.

Re: Strengthening the core

planks ( with good form),everything already mentioned. You can hit abs almost every day.
Farmer carrys also and putting weight over your head, as you discovered, will work your abs/back

Re: Strengthening the core

If the overhead press is the only situation in which you've noticed big problems with your core, I think the best way to address that situation is to walk around with the barbell overhead.

Otherwise, I love the standing ab-wheel rollout.

Re: Strengthening the core

If you have access to a smith machine and flat bench, you can use those to substitute for the GHD. Lately, I've been hooking my feet under the smith bar and positioning the bench to support my lower back and using it like a GHD. You can get a pretty large range of motion doind them that way.
