i had a question on kipping pullups and pullups themselves.
say athlete a can do x amount of pullups, when do you add the kipping pull ups into the equation?
and how many kipping pull ups equate to a single dead hang one?

I don't think that math works. It's like asking "How many 95# presses equal one handstand push-up?"

It's not the same exercise. I guess the kipping pull-up will help you do dead hang pull-ups but why would you want to? Kipping is a blast!

Try and do kipping on one of these that's not bolted down...

It's the only thing I got where I can do self assists. My gravatron machine doesn't have pullup handles, so I have to invent new ways to hang off it every time.

For me I'd say 5 Kippers = 3or4 dead hangs. But I'm no expert at all on doing these dreadful exercizes, these should simply be outlawed for all I care.

chris jordan,
i guess i equated using the kipping pull ups to finish off your pull ups. i haven't wod for several years so didn't know it is used totally seperate. i liked coach sommers comments on them and the ballistic effect it is supposed to have on the shoulder girdle. thanks for the help. now we need a plyo type movement for hspu. of course there's depth jumps with those but you need spot.

Kawika, plyo type movements for handstands are called blocking drills. Gymnasts do them all the time :-).

We bounce up and down mats on our hands. I've done depth jumps. Not terribly high and only with folks with strong handstands.

Roger thanks for he response.
correct me if i'm wrong, but blocking drills primarilly work the block.
meaning the traps and last inch or less of arm extension. minimal anterior delt and tricep recruitment.
the pop/block.

when dong hspu the last inch or so is not the sticking point for most people. that's the link i'm looking for to transition to monster reps of hspu. like what kipping does for guys who can already do 20-30+ pu, it catapults them into 10-20plus more pr. now if i could only do 1 hspu. lol.

Yeah, blocking drills are predominantly a shoulder function and last bit of extension.

There's not really any body function that is going to do what kipping pullups do. The fastest HSPU (freestanding) is going to be one that stays right on top keeps a great body line and just powers through. A better comparison is a squat. A HSPU is a squat on your hands. There's no kipping squat, there's no kipping HSPU.
