Where do kipping pull ups come from ( their origin : gymnastic etc..?) What is their advantage over regular pull ups .
They look a bit like a way to cheat , to make more pull up. |

Wow...there are a TON of discussions about this on the boards. Try searching for kipping and kipping pull-up via the search function. There is also an entire Crossfit journal dedicated to the kipping pullup.
Short version: Kipping allows more work to be done in less time, thus increasing power output. It is also a full-body coordination movement when performed correctly, which applies more functionally to real-life application of pulling skills. Last, but not least, the hip motion of an effective kip mirrors the motion of the olympic lifts/kettlebell swings, adding to it's function as a posterior-chain developer. http://www.crossfit.com/cgi-bin/discus/search.cgi |

Moving to Exercises (with the million others of this exact same question...)
OK, I lied. A search for "kipping" reveals only 368, not a million. |

Yeah, but's that's only because you looked for "kipping". Reduce the search to just "kip" and it pulls up 1,453,659 entries . . .
(j/k . . . it's 733). |

You can read all those hits and probably not pick up much more than Jesse's 63-word (acc. MS Word) short version, nice post.

Yep, Jesse hit the nail on the head. But just to get you started, here's one of my favorite (multi-page) threads on the kipping pull-up:

Great post Jesse.
That needs to be posted somewhere where it's easily spotted. Maybe the Lynne Pitts' FAQ? This question does seem to come up quite a bit, and Jesse's answer is the shortest I've ever seen while still covering the basics of the argument. |

Can't argue that...it's definitely FAQ-worthy!

Perhaps it can be better put on a T-shirt:
Kipping Pull-up...just do it |
