DIY Battling Ropes

I'm looking into buying rope to use John Brookfield's Battling Ropes system for conditioning and have a couple of questions:

Are DIY battling/power ropes - just a length of rope from the DIY store - as good as those being commercially sold?

Is there a reason that the rope sold commercially is 50 feet? I know it'd be ridiculous if the rope was only 5 feet, but is there any reason for or against a 40 foot or 60 foot etc rope?

Re: DIY Battling Ropes

I have worked out at an affiliate that used firehose instead of the battling ropes and it worked out well. Get in contact with your local FD and see if they have any cut or damaged hoses that you can take off their hands, just ask for a 50' line.

I am interested in this also. Does anyone know where to get some good thick synthetic rope that can be used for a good price?

www.mcmaster.com work/family safe

search for manila rope. they will sell different lengths. synthetic I'm told will cut your hands. length wise the longer will give more resistance. i'm not really sure how short you could go....
