Study claims coffee reduces pain of exercise
The gist of this study is that moderate amounts of coffee result in lessened pain during and after exercise, regardless whether or not the subject consumed coffee habitually.

No, it supposed to cause a stress which you will heal from causing an adaptation. If you are having trouble getting the intensity high enough to produce enough stress, this is good. If you are causing too much stress and overtrain, this is bad.

But what about when performance is critical and stress/adaptation is irrelevant? For example, an important race. A little bit of coffee to decrease pain and therefore increase output? |

Yes, now we're back to the training/competing dichotomy. I should have mentioned that as well, yes, if you are competing it's a different story.
