Shoulder ripping sensation

After i do overhead press, on my left (non-dominant) shoulder, right at the top i get this feeling like the muscle is slowly being ripped from the bone. Also if i put my hands on my arm rest here, and push my shoulders out theres pain. Its more intense on my left side but still there on my right too. Any ideas what this might be? I also get a feeling like my shoulder ball is tracking badly with a grinding kind of feeling/sound.

Re: Shoulder ripping sensation

It's hard to know exactly what it is you're trying to describe, but the fact that you get the pain at the top of the lift when the shoulder joint is fully abducted and extended suggests some kind of shoulder impingement, probably of the supraspinatus muscle. Also, if you are having problems with the 'tracking' of your shoulder it suggests there might be some kind of rotator cuff weakness or imbalance.

What is your experience with exercise/lifting? Are you relatively un trained or have you been doing it for a while?

Re: Shoulder ripping sensation

I second the supraspinatus.

Check out this thread for a way to double check.

Are you using active shoulders?

Re: Shoulder ripping sensation

I just had shoulder surgery in Sept for a Bankart and bone spur (four dislocations will do that to you), and ripping or tearing feeling/sound is never good. I would definitely see a doc ... Be specific about what you do to cause that pain, that helped when I first saw the doc.

Good luck. If you do actually end up having surgery, ice is your friend.

Re: Shoulder ripping sensation

Go see an orthopedic surgeon/sports medicine doc now. Don't wait. Stop overhead lifting until you go.

Re: Shoulder ripping sensation

Yes go see a shoulder specialist. They will perform special tests that will allow them to see what is really bothering you. Then they should send you for an MRI but try to get the one where they inject the dye into your shoulder it is much more accurate. I am currently recovering from having my labrum repaired and my pec. muscle reattached to the bone on my left side. Almost 6 weeks out from surgery and am starting to get a little more ROM. Had my right shoulder repaired about 10 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did. It's like new. I know the grinding you hear or feel is usually associated with a rotator cuff tear. Do not bench or press until u get looked at. Unfortuantly the only way to recover from this is usually surgery but it is well worth it. Good Luck!
