The End of Theory

Interesting article on Wired's site about the "black boxing" of science. (WFS)

Re: The End of Theory

I don't think scientific models and theories will go by the wayside quite yet. They provide valuable abstractions from which to make further hypotheses.

The way I see it is that black box testing is time specific (ie/ Google has to periodically crawl the internet to update it's 'cloud'). However, scientific models and theories are 'timeless'. Gravity is still there whether you have a large set of data indicating that apples fall from trees.

I think black box testing can provide valuable data though - Fuzzing is something new in software engineering that I'm looking into a bit more. It's pure black box testing for the purpose of pointing out problems inside of software. In the same way, I think the 'petabyte age' of black box testing will provide scientists with observations about the black box so they can build a model or theory out of it.
