While I patiently wait for my elite rings, I rigged a set of PVC ghetto rings. I have been doing muscle ups, dips and push-ups. Does anyone do pull-ups on rings? I know they can be done, but is it common here? I don't think I've ever seen it mentioned. Are there advantages/disadvantages?

Most of my pullups are on rings, 'cause that's what I've got here at the house. Also, the majority of my PUs (rings or otherwise) are dead-hang, though I do know how to kip and am slowly getting better with practice.

One of the positives to ring PUs is that they float with your hand position, reducing some of the torsional strain on your elbows and shoulders.

You can work on false grip pull ups. This will help your muscle ups.

I've always liked ring pullups more. The ROM allows for a bit more range as well.
You can kip them a bit by opening and flexing the spine. It's just not that effective.

Rings are cooler. Then again I don't really like High-Bar at all.

Like Matt, I do most of my pull-ups on rings except I kip most of the time. However, I have been steadily building up my L pull-up reps for those pesky WODs that call for them. I totally agree with Baron, rings are much easier on the shoulders and elbows. When I injured my left rotator cuff last year, I was able to get back into pull-ups and dips much faster with my rings. Kipping on rings requires more practice to perform well, but is highly doable. I can do 30 with no breaks.

I've had the same experience. The movement and versatility of the rings is much easier on the joints. I like switch it up and do them both ways.
