Egg yolk

Is it good to eat the egg yolk? Since reading the forums some people say all the good nutrients are in the york but from diets like the P90X diet, i've understood that the yolk is only fat.

Re: Egg yolk

75% of the protein in an egg is in the whites.
Almost 100% of the fat is in the yolk.

However, that yolk contains many good fats, vitamins and minerals if you're getting high quality eggs. Even if you're not, you're still getting more vitamins/minerals from the yolk than the whites.

The "scientific" literature is conflicting and inconclusive at best when it comes to the egg's influence on health and disease. I've seen studies showing positive changes in blood lipids from eating eggs as well as from avoiding them.

It's more important what that egg comes wrapped in, cooked in, or eating with; are you eating whole eggs cooked in a pan or hard boiled, or are you having egg McMuffins every morning. In former is a whole food, real food approach, the latter is junk food.

Many times people toss the yolks because they don't need the extra calories from the fat, and that's perfectly fine. But don't kid yourself that it's somehow "healthier."

Finally P90X is trying to get people to loose weight, that's the primary goal of the diet. You can loose weight, and be healthy all while eating eat yolks.

Actually, it's more like a 55/45% split. Of the 7 grams of protein in a standard "large" egg, 4 grams are in the white and 3 in the yolk. By volume, yolks contain almost 50% more protein than whites.

Re: Egg yolk

The yolk is a part of an egg that shouldn't be left out. It has good nutrition value and removing it is unnecessary. Eggs have always had a bad reputation, one that is undeserved. Eggs as a whole, even with the yolks, are a very healthy food for your body.

Like others said, eat the yolk. Mainstream society today has been brainwashed quite well by the government (hold on, don't pull out your conspiracy theorist stick yet) to be scared of cholesterol and fat. This community has done a pretty good job of ignoring it. People don't realize that there are healthy fats and fats contain cholesterol. While cholesterol gets a bad rep is it necessary for important things in fitness like synthesizing testosterone and plays an important part in our thyroid function.

I would at least make sure you're getting cage free eggs to eat, since the fat profile is much healthier in terms of n-3 fats to n-6 fats. Costco has great deals on massive amounts of cage free eggs.
