I'm new to crossfitting and was hoping someone could shed some light on the additional terms attached onto the lifts. For example, there is the clean, squat clean, power clean and hang clean. What does the "power" and "hang" position refer to exactly? I have viewed the exercises on the link and see the difference but was hoping someone could put it into words for me :-)

Also, random question. Does anyone know why the press was banned from the 1972 olympics? I know it has something to do with the judging criteria but was again hoping for some more specifics. Ok, randomness done, thanks!

You can either start with the bar on the ground, or with the bar at the thighs(the "hang" position).
The "squat" vs "power" part refers to where you catch the bar after the pull.

Squat Clean: you catch the bar on your shoulders in a full squat.

Power Clean: you catch the bar at anything less than a full squat, usually about a quarter squat.

So, the hang refers to the start position. Power/squat refer to the catch position.

Please be sure to read the FAQ (where the terms are defined) as well as checking the Exercises page, and the Getting Started links.

diane, the press (clean and press, in full) is no longer done in meets because it became too hard to judge. lifters would clean the bar, and then to press it, would dip under the bar explosively by bending backwards:

it caused hard judging calls and was a safety hazard.
