Can you take too much fish oil?

The supplement I use is Health From the Sea brand liquid fish oil.

It says 1 tsp/day for the adult dose.

1 tsp. contains 4360mg. of pure fish oil: 715 mg. EPA and 470 mg. DHA.

I was thinking about increasing to 1 tsp. twice a day because I'm having new onset joint pain in multiple joints (left knee, left elbow, even some of my finger joints hurt---I'm a mess!)

But does anyone know if this would be a waste of fish oil, or worse, too much of a good thing?

Thanks!
Susie

Susie, if your a mess maybe you need to start examining other things. Sufficient sleep? How about rest and recovery?

Regards to the fish oil, I was told just to use Omega 3s. When I used Nordic Naturals I took 3caps/3x day! Now I have a high epa liquid from Dr. G and only use 1tsp daily --much easier.

Re: Can you take too much fish oil?

I dunno, I've been wondering the same thing, after watching Coach's warning for anyone who's going to be deployed soon (omega 3's help make cell walls more "flexible" (if that's the right word)), I got to thinking. My wife's pregnant, and obviously there's some bleeding that happens when that puppy decides it's time to make an entrance into the world, and I'd like to keep that to a minimum.

I think I might be concerned over nothing, but lately we've switched to all grassfed beef and Christopher eggs (like 600+ mg of Omega 3's per egg). We eat some form of the grassfed beef probably 3-4 times a week for dinner, and eggs we go through 4 dozen in about 2 weeks. I think it's no problem, but it just entered my mind that we may possibly be getting "too much" Omega 3's, but I seriously doubt it.

On that topic, maybe switch to grassfed beef/chicken/whatever, and buy Christopher eggs (recommended by Slanker's as the 2nd best alternative to their grassfed hens' eggs). It might save you the problem of Omega 3 supplementation, although I haven't looked at the numbers.

Omega 3 heath risks (as in too much) WFS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omega-3...d#Health_risks

Basically if you are on blood thinners already, you should consult your doctor before loading on omega 3.

Matt, I'd just cut out supplementation before the due date rolls around, unless she's at risk for an abruptio or something similar.

Re: Can you take too much fish oil?

My wife was taking fish oil supps right up to the labour and had no bleeding related complications. About 3-4 pills aday with oily fish twice a week or so and some omega eggs. She wasn't eating much in the way of meat as she lost her tatse for it early in teh pregnancy.

Re: Can you take too much fish oil?

I've drastically increased my omega 3 intake the past week and all I can say is WOW! All little aches and pains disappear within a day max, I'm full of energy, etc.. Not sure if you can "OD" on it, but I'm at 4.2g of EPA and DHA per day and loving it! Hopefully I'll always have the money to supplement this highly with it!

Neither of us are supplementing with anything, just eating all grassfed beef and eggs (which both have a 1:1 ratio). Chicken is normal store-bought though.

I really wouldn't worry about it.

Re: Can you take too much fish oil?

Susie,
With multiple joint pains, I typically advise my patients to:
Increase their fish oil
Eliminate nightshades
Test supplemental magnesium

Those three things work on a systemic level (kind of like the "systemic" inflammation that may be causing multiple joints to ache).
