Should I cheat on the Zone?

It seems some people cheat once a week? What is the recommended thing, 1 cheat meal per week? 1 cheat day per week?

Explain

Re: Should I cheat on the Zone?

I think there is no recommended thing on CF. Some people find that they don't need to cheat. Some people do. Some people have planned cheats. Some have accidental cheats. It is entirely up to you. Nevertheless after any cheat we don't fret about it and move on and get back on Zone/Paleo.

Re: Should I cheat on the Zone?

I prefer to cheat every day - using 1 cheat ingredient per meal. Usually ends up being a very minor addition to an absolutely clean and perfect meal.

Example - shred a bit of Parmasean over a salad. Eat a 1/4 cup of ice cream as dessert. Have 1 oz of chocolate with lunch.

If you include a bit of a cheat ingredient and eat it with your meal you are much more apt to stay with eating plan then going with a huge cheat meal that is going to make you feel like crap.

I think you should do whatever works for you. I personally try and avoid cheating, because one cheat leads to 3 days of cheating. For me, whatever plan I am on becomes habit, whether it be adhering to the Zone or eating like crap.

Re: Should I cheat on the Zone?

My regular habit is to eat super clean at both home and work during the workweek. The weekend is for eating mostly clean.

I tend to let things slip a bit at restaurants, as I know it's really tough to eat clean there anyway.

It all depends on what point you're at.

I still do my absolute best not to cheat with nightshades, ever. That's my own personal thing, the pain price I have to pay over the next 1-2 days just isn't worth it.

Re: Should I cheat on the Zone?

Alicia, it's nothing crazy, just my old nemeses, right-side neck pain and left-side middle back pain.

One of the reasons I believe so much in the capacity for the nightshades to cause pain is that NO modality in conventional or alternative medicine ever gave me more than an hour of relief (and as an ND, I tried most of them). The only thing that has ever gotten me long-term significant relief is complete avoidance. Avoiding gluten is also a big help, but I know the payoff is in the nightshades.

Kind of like DOMS, 24 hours after I eat them I get what I call a "preview" of the pain--about 1/2 the pain that is coming. The full amount of pain comes around 48 hours. Sometimes it is enough to make me avoid my workout that day.

FYI, I'm pretty darn sensitive to my body, so while a small amount of pain is totally bearable, it's also unacceptable to me.

A small bit of paprika on some homemade pumpkin seeds was enough to set me off earlier this week (I forgot they put that on there).

So, no worries. For me, the risk isn't worth the benefit.

Hey Garrett, um, what is a nightshade? Sorry if it should be obvious.

John,
Search the board or go to WFS www.noarthritis.com or go to www.performancemenu.com and get your free issue as the September issue (I wrote a big article on them there). That should give you plenty to start with.
