When I was at CrossFit North in Seattle a few weeks ago I finally had the chance to try out an exercise that I had been eager to try for quite a while- chain pullups.
From a standard dip belt, attach 25 lbs of chains so that as you pull up, the chains lift of the ground. At the top, all of the chains should be off the ground. As you get higher and higher, the weight increases. So you should try to accelerate against the increasing weight.
This exercise is definitely a winner. Barry was thinking of ways to apply Westside to pullups and I think this could be it.
I had been theorizing that this would be a great exercise, but I hadn't had a chance to try it. Now that I have given it a shot, I would highly recommend it. A very cool exercise.

Tyler, if you like them with chains, you will probably like them just as much with a band. Both do the same thing, except bands are easier to carry in your gym bag.

I was glad to hear you liked that. I'd like to try that as well. I need to get some chains, first.

As far as the bands, I think it would be interesting to put the bands on the top as well, so they help you accelerate up, and you sort of bounce off the bottom. They seem to do it both ways at Westside. I think they also do a rep, then drop something, either a band or chain. The concept would seem to make sense.

Cool, I think you will like them.

True, the bands are lighter, but you need something to anchor them to. So, for working out in the park, it ends up being about the same. I can fit my rings and some chains in a backpack no problem. I have tried band pullups, but I did not like the feel as much. Bands are great and I use them on presses, but for some reason I just like chains better for pullups.

Well, consider this:

With bands, you will have less than your bodyweight at the bottom, and your bodyweight at the top.

With chains, you have your bodyweight at the bottom, (plus a little bit of chain), and more than your bodyweight at the top.

It really depends what level you're at on pullups, I suppose.

You attach lengths of chain to yourself, or to a barbell, so that when you lift yourself, or the barbell, the effective weight lifted becomes greater and greater, as more of the chain is lifted off the ground.

In a benchpress, it adds more weight at the stronger point of the lift.

So, in other words, attaching chains increases the resistance progressively.
