Re: {TKA} Total Knee Arthroplasty

Pete,

I had a total knee replacement 18 months ago (230 bw, 6'3") and I have been enjoying the ability to do crossfit because of the new knee. The big question is what kind of lifts and weights can I do without sacrificing the longevity of the knee.

Out: box jumps, broad jumps, squat jumps, skipping rope.

I have do jump for a bar and then let myself down easy as one substitute.

I am cool with lower weights and higher reps - I'd like to hear how you determined how much activity and weight is safe.

Re: {TKA} Total Knee Arthroplasty

There are too many opinions about what kind of lifts and weights can be done without sacrificing the longevity of the knee. I don't lift over my body weight of 205 on Squats, Shoulder Press or Deadlifts

I think this is true. I was lifting more weight than my body weight, especially on deadlifts and squats. And I had problems that had to be fixed by additional surgery. Thankfully, the hardware was all good. For me, I plan to lighten the loads, a lot. After a suitable recovery period, that is.

In addition to load, the other big concern is impact. I'm resigned to the fact that my running days are over, probably box-jumping as well (unless maybe it's okay to jump up and step down?). What do you guys think re skipping rope and burpees? I have made "ability to do a burpee" my definition of full recovery - but would they be dangerous?

Re: {TKA} Total Knee Arthroplasty

I try and avoid any impact activities so: No jumping or skipping rope, Burpee's without the jump, and step-ups to name a few. I run 4 x 100's at an easy pace on a Football field once a week because I have to respond to emergency situations at work
