Spironolactone and muscle mass in women

Anyone have any experience with women who take spironolactone (andogren suppressor) for acne and what, if any, side effects it causes to muscle mass or strength?

Re: Spironolactone and muscle mass in women

Sarah,
We have a couple of adult females (one 19 and one 21) who are taking spirololactone for ance. They are not crossfitters, but one is a competitive swimmer and the other is a trathlete who does a lot of strength training. They don't report any decrease in athletic performance. I will have to ask them they next time they are in.
I am not aware of any studies where anyone has looked at strength training and strength gain/loss in women who take spironolactone.
I suppose, theoretically, by antagonizing androgens/testosterone, they could have an affect on strength gains, but again, I don't think anyone has looked at that.
Maybe do a before/after comparison and see what you find?

Thanks Mike! I was just considering taking it if Retin-A doesn't work as well as I want, so I wanted to make sure I wasn't going to set myself up for more frustration on that end!

There is also the option to use topical spironolactone, a compounding pharmacy can make it. I have a few friends on it for acne.

(this is not medical advice, see your doctor for that)

Sarah,
Topical is an option, though there is not a lot of data showing that it's effective. Oral administration has been better studied, although I think there is a fairly decent sized trial of topical going on right now. Topical might ber worth a try if your hesitant to take oral.

Here is a good article, basic review of spironolactone for acne in adult femailes. (WFS) http://www.jcadonline.com/oral-spiro...al-experience/
