Forbidden Fruits (and Vegetables)

A story (WFS) in the New York Times documents the penalties the government puts on farmers trying to grow non-subsidized crops (corn, soybeans, rice, wheat, and cotton), thus restricting supply of healthy vegetables. Winning part: financial penalties if you used acreage to plant non-subsidized crops, but NOT if you choose to plant nothing at all!

I didn't know about this flipside of the Farm Bill!

Re: Forbidden Fruits (and Vegetables)

Emily, have you read either of Michael Pollan's recent books? The newest, In Defense Of Food speaks to this issue.

It really irks me personally that it costs more to buy naturally grown (though easier to grow; no processing cost) vegetables than it is to buy highly processed corn-based (high fructose corn syrup, etc.) food-type substances.
